Life Light 2011

This past weekend, a large group of our church traveled to Worthing, SD to participate in the Life Light Festival 2011.

Approximately 30 people from the DAC camped, in some capacity, on the Life Light Campgrounds.  During a long weekend of music and Christian speakers we were challenged to support the church in it’s mission to take the love of Christ out into the darkness.

We saw many great musical acts such as Relient K, Tenth Avenue North and Jeremy Camp and were challenged in our faith by Francis Chan, Don Piper and Bill Wiess.

Journey to Peru

PERU MISSIONS TEAM

Our Peru Missions Team will leave for Peru this coming Thursday, just 4 days from today. The first leg of the journey on Thursday, July 21, will take us to Minneapolis where families from Hope Church (C&MA) in Apple Valley, MN, will host us overnight. They will also bring us to the airport early Friday morning, July 22, to catch our 6:00 a.m. flight to Chicago. After flying for three hours from Chicago to Fort Lauderdale, FL, we will catch a late afternoon nearly six hour flight that will transport us across the Equator to Lima, Peru. We will have to stay overnight in the Lima airport to wait for the 7:00 a.m. flight that will take us the final leg of our journey from Lima to Trujillo where our missions work will be done.

“NCD”

Out here on the prairie we’re familiar with the pioneer spirit that inspired settlers like the Ingalls family to travel to this place we call De Smet and make it their home. And the most common form of transportation for such pioneers was a simple wagon. We know what wagons should look like,…

…but I don’t think this is what we had in mind, now is it? Why in the world would anyone make such an effort to move an other-      wise fine wagon using square wheels?…especially when the wagon is full of beautiful round wheels just waiting to be used?

“Not So Much Nervous As Excited”

Nine months ago in the August 2010 edition of The Window, my front-page piece dealt with my first impressions of deciding to go to Peru on a ten-day missions trip. According to my title I was “a little nervous, but excited.” The “nervous” part was mostly about raising so much money for myself, David and Nathan to all go. And since then, Linda has also joined us on the team which means that as a family we have to come up with four times the amount of money each person needs for the trip. Yeah, that’s a lot of money!

“Maybe It’s Time”

Something that I’ve been thinking about for a while is how to communicate prayer requests in a better way. This isn’t to say that our Prayer Tree hasn’t worked well over the years. It certainly has served us well, and will continue to do so in the future. But along with using the telephone, maybe it’s time to start using some other technology.

“A Cold and Slippery World”

Last fall I had the privilege of conducting the funeral for Roy Fitts who would have celebrated his 100th birthday this year. Roy was quite a story-teller, as some of you know, but it was now time to hear others tell stories about him. One memorable story was about another funeral Roy attended where he was asked to be a pall bearer and carry the casket to and from the hearse. It helps to know that Roy had always been kind of a thin person without much meat on him. So, it was decided that he should be placed on a middle handle so he wouldn’t have to bear much of the casket’s weight.

“A Time to Retreat”

Pastors Institute. It sounds so formal, what with “Institute” being part of the name and all. Very aca-demic. And maybe in the past it was more formal. But the current bi-annual four-day retreat that our District Continuing Education Committee organizes is really a good combination of learning and growing academically, as well as “retreating” from the busy world of ministry especially after the Thanksgiving/ Christmas/ New Year’s season. I really appreciate the opportunity to go to this event every other year.

“Let’s Keep Praying”

It seems like every time we enter a new year it  is always a bit of a surprise. We wonder where the last year went. There was so much more I wanted to do. How could it have gone by so fast? I suppose it goes just as fast for you as it does for everyone else on this planet. It just depends on how you look at each moment as it comes. You can look at them as something to savor and remember; or you can let these moments slip by without much thought given to them – and then they’re forgotten. Hope-fully you remember much more than you don’t.

“Attention: Cell Phone Owners”

I was talking with a friend recently who said that he didn’t have a cell phone. It wasn’t a big deal to him; but many of you find that hard to believe. Your cell phone has become your life line. It is indeed an incredible tool to keep track of what’s going in your life. It is truly amazing that so many different appli-cations can be compacted into something that fits into the palm of your hand – telephone, calendar, e-mail, address book, internet access, games, alarm clock, music player, photo album, library of books and magazines, texting, and the list goes on and on. Some of the latest phones even have video capability so that you can talk “face-to-face” with someone else. What will they think of next?
